Cerazette is a contraceptive that prevents pregnancy. It is a mini-pill, also known as the progestogen-only (POP) type of contraceptive pill. It contains only one female sexhormone, desogestrel, and does not contain oestrogen. Cerazette is different than most POPs because it has a dose that prevents most egg cells from ripening. What is Cerazette?
Cerazette tablets contain desogestrel 75 micrograms. Desogestrel, a synthetic progestogen similar to natural progestogen hormones, is found in Cerazette tablets.
Desogestrel stops your ovaries releasing eggs each month (ovulation). It increases the thickness and permeability of the womb’s natural mucus, which makes it harder for sperm from to cross the vagina to the womb.

Yes. Yes. Although small amounts of desogestrel can be found in breast milk, there are no known adverse effects on nursing babies. It does not affect breast milk production.
Cerazette: How do you take it?
First, choose the time you will take your pill. Next, take one Cerazette tablet every day at the same time each day. You can continue with the next pack without a break after you have finished a pack. This means that you will be taking one tablet per day, even if you are having a period.

- What is the best time to start Cerazette?
- Cerazette can be started at any stage of your menstrual cycle.
You won’t have to use extra contraception if you start it between days 1 and 5. However, if your menstrual cycle is short (e.g., you only get your period once every 23 days), then starting it on days 1 to 5 of your period may not be effective. You should still use additional contraception during the first two days.
You will need additional contraception if you begin Cerazette during any other part of your cycle. For the first two days, condoms are required.
Cerazette after having a baby
Cerazette should be taken starting on the 21st day after your baby is born. This will immediately protect you from pregnancy and you won’t need extra contraception. Extra contraception should be used for the first two days after Cerazette is started if Cerazette is taken more than 21 days following birth.
Cerazette following a miscarriage/abortion
Cerazette can be taken within five days of a miscarriage, abortion or other related event. This will protect you from pregnancy. You should not start Cerazette more than five days following a miscarriage.
What do you do if Cerazette is not taken?
You can forget to take your pill at the usual time. Just remember to take it as soon you remember. If you have missed more than one, just take the one that you remember. Your next pill will be taken at the same time as your previous one. You may need to take two pills at once, but this is normal.
You are protected even if you take a pill less than 12 hours late and you don’t need extra contraception.
You won’t be protected from pregnancy if you take your pill more than 12 hours late. Either you should not have sex or use an additional barrier method (eg condoms), for the next two working days while you continue to take your pill as usual. To avoid pregnancy, you will need to take the morning-after pill if you have had unprotected sexual activity during this period. Diarrhoea or vomiting
You should not vomit within 2 hours of taking Cerazette tablets. This could indicate that the tablet has not been fully absorbed into you bloodstream. Take another pill as soon you feel better. You’ll be protected as long as the replacement pill is taken within 12 hour of your normal time and your next pill is taken at your regular time. However, your pill may not be as effective if you are still sick. You can continue to take your pill as normal, but you should use contraception during stomach upsets and for the next two days.
